RESPECT Act Markup and Native Business Oversight Hearings Tomorrow in Congress

Tomorrow, there two hearings in Congress will take place regarding policies that impact Indian Country broadly. The first, starting at 10:00 am EST, is a full markup in the House Natural Resources Committee on the Requirements, Expectations, and Standard Procedures for Effective Consultation with Tribes Act (the “RESPECT Act”, H.R. 3587). The RESPECT Act, first introduced on May 28, 2021, by Chairman Raul Grijalva, will establish tribal consultation procedures for all federal agencies, codifying into law that federal agencies must consult with tribal governments before taking federal actions that may impact tribal lands, rights, resources, or citizens. In addition, the bill will establish government-wide standards for identifying agency actions that have tribal impacts, conducting adequate outreach to tribal governments, documenting tribal consultation, and implementing training to improve federal-tribal relations. The second, starting at 4:00 pm EST is an oversight hearing in the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs on supporting Native Business capacity building entitled “Buy Native American: Federal Support for Native Business Capacity Building and Success.” The Committee will hear testimonies from the following officials and experts on federal programs that aim to provide Native businesses equitable access to capital markets:

Gary Hennigh, City Administrator, City of King Cove, Anchorage, AK
