| As we reflect on this past Labor Day, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the men and women whose daily dedication and perseverance sustain our communities and our nation. Labor Day is more than a holiday; it honors the dignity of work, the sacrifices of earlier generations, and the vital contributions of today’s workforce that keep America moving forward. We celebrate the strength and resilience of workers whose efforts built the opportunities we enjoy. For Indian Country, the meaning of labor is deeply rooted in our history and traditions. From caring for our lands and providing for our families to building modern industries, work has always been a way to strengthen our Nations and secure a better future for the generations to come. That legacy continues today in many forms, and Indian gaming is one of the most visible examples of our shared progress. This past July, the National Indian Gaming Commission reported $43.9 billion in revenues for Fiscal Year 2024, marking the third consecutive year of growth since the pandemic. Just as significant, our industry now supports nearly 700,000 direct and ancillary jobs across the country. These are real jobs for tribal citizens and for our neighbors in surrounding communities. They help families, sustain local economies, and provide a pathway to greater stability and opportunity. The benefits of Indian gaming reach far beyond tribal lands. In FY 2024 alone, more than $10 billion was generated for state, local, and federal governments. These contributions reflect the important role Indian Country plays in strengthening the overall U.S. economy while building economic self-sufficiency for our Nations. Labor Day reminds us that every worker matters. People power Indian gaming, driven by their commitment, skill, and belief in a stronger tomorrow. Today, I honor not only the Native workforce but also the thousands of non-Native men and women who stand alongside us in this effort. Together, we celebrate resilience, opportunity, and the enduring value of hard work.As we observe Labor Day, let us remember that the story of America is written by its workers. Indian Country is proud to be a strong part of that story, and we stand united with workers everywhere who continue to build this Nation. |
